When your teen is struggling, and talking isn't working

Maybe grades are slipping, or your teen is holding it together at school and falling apart at home. Maybe homework turns into a nightly fight, or they've gone quiet and you can't tell if it's normal teenage distance or something more.

Anchor Point Integrative Therapy works with teens and their families in Bloomingdale and across Illinois. We help teens understand what's going on inside them, build practical skills for stress and focus, and feel less alone with it.

What we help teens with

  • School pressure and academic stress: perfectionism, test anxiety, falling behind, school avoidance
  • ADHD: focus, organization, emotional ups and downs, and the frustration of being told to "just try harder"
  • Anxiety and worry: racing thoughts, panic, social anxiety, stomachaches before school
  • Depression and low mood: withdrawal, irritability, losing interest in things they used to enjoy
  • Autism: neuroaffirming support for social stress, change and sensory overload
  • Identity and belonging: LGBTQIA+ affirming care, friendships, fitting in
  • Grief and family change: loss, divorce, a move, a new sibling
  • Sports and performance pressure: nerves before games, recovering from mistakes, burnout

How we work with teens

Teens can usually tell when an adult is lecturing them. Our approach is collaborative, practical and down to earth. Sessions feel like a conversation, not a classroom.

  • Their patterns make sense. Shutting down, snapping or avoiding schoolwork usually started as a way to cope. We help teens understand that, then build better options.
  • Skills they can use this week. We draw on CBT, trauma-informed care and person-centered therapy to teach concrete tools for stress, focus and big feelings.
  • Parents are part of the plan. We check in with parents regularly and give you specific ways to help at home, while protecting the trust your teen needs to open up.

Meet Janet Hay, LCSW

Janet has more than 35 years of experience with children, teens and families. Her background includes therapeutic school settings, crisis intervention, juvenile court services and community mental health. She specializes in ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, grief and substance use, and is neuroaffirming and LGBTQIA+ affirming. Teens tend to relax around her quickly; she's warm, direct and has a good sense of humor.

Janet sees most teens by secure video, which fits around school, practices and activities without a drive. She also has one in-person day a week at our Bloomingdale office for families who prefer to meet face to face.

Frequently asked questions

What ages do you see?

We see teens and preteens ages 11 to 17, along with their parents and families.

Do you help teens with ADHD?

Yes. We help teens with ADHD build focus and organization skills, manage frustration and emotional ups and downs, and rebuild confidence. We do not diagnose or prescribe medication, but we coordinate with your teen's doctor or psychiatrist when that helps.

Can you help with school stress and anxiety?

Yes. School pressure, perfectionism, test anxiety and school avoidance are some of the most common reasons families call us.

How involved will I be as a parent?

Most teens meet with their therapist one on one, with regular parent check-ins and family sessions when they help. We'll talk through what will be shared with you and what stays private, so everyone knows what to expect from the start.

Do you take BCBS insurance?

Yes. We are in-network with BCBS PPO. Your cost depends on your plan's copay or deductible, and we'll help you check your benefits before the first session. We also offer private pay.

Is virtual therapy an option for teens?

Yes, and many teens prefer it. Video sessions fit around school and activities with no drive, and teens often open up more easily from their own space. In-person sessions are also available at our Bloomingdale office; ask about in-person days when you call.

How do we get started?

Call or text (847) 220-8829 for a free 15-minute consultation. We return calls the same business day.
